A New Model for Fisheries, Envisioned by umios Planet

While fishing efforts are concentrated on a limited number of species, many others remain underutilized and are often discarded.

This reflects a fundamental limitation of conventional fisheries systems that have treated fish merely as raw materials.

umios Planet envisions a new model that treats each fish as something valuable, almost like a treasure. At its core is the idea of sanpo-yoshi, a “triple win” value cycle, that benefits consumers, the environment, and those who work in fisheries alike.

Scope and Approach of umios Planet

Creating products alone will not achieve a new model for fisheries.

At umios Planet, we collaborate with the University of Tokyo, alongside JR East, Planetary Health Innovation Center, and fisheries and aquaculture partners across Japan.

From research and development to aquaculture and sourcing, we are advancing initiatives across the entire value chain. This includes product innovation, new sales approaches, and the use of data.

Collaborative Research for
Planetary Health

One of the key pillars of umios Planet is its joint research with the University of Tokyo.

This includes using science to uncover the hidden nutritional value of seafood, creating foods that support individual health,
and improving preservation to transform the distribution of seafood.

Through these socially implemented research initiatives, we contribute to the realization of planetary health.

About Planetary Health

Human health is fundamentally dependent on the health of the planet.

Planetary health is an approach that views human wellbeing and the state of the Earth’s environment as interconnected.

In 2009, scientists proposed nine limits within which humanity can safely operate, known as the planetary boundaries (see figure on left).

Within these limits, we need to find ways of living and eating that are in harmony with nature.

In this context, umios Planet focuses on the significant potential of seafood.

Fish are highly nutritious and have a lower environmental impact compared to other animal-based protein sources.

From Takanawa Gateway to the World

umios Planet is based in Takanawa Gateway City.
It is a new urban hub where Umios and a range of companies come together to explore and experiment with cutting-edge technologies.
From this city, we aim to share the vision and pioneering initiatives of umios Planet with the world.
